Kim Klyver

Kim Klyver is an internationally recognized professor of entrepreneurship at the University of Southern Denmark and adjunct professor at the University of Adelaide. He has previously served as a part-time visiting professor at the Stockholm School of Economics and has held academic positions at Swinburne University of Technology (Australia) and Stanford University (USA).

His research explores how entrepreneurs and small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) interact with their environment to identify opportunities, access resources, and build legitimacy—factors that together drive entrepreneurial performance.

Over the course of a 20-year academic career, Kim Klyver has focused on themes such as networks, crises, culture, growth, and gender in entrepreneurship. His work has been published in numerous internationally renowned journals, and he has authored several books in both Danish and English. His research has been supported by leading institutions including the Danish Council for Independent Research, the Danish Industry Foundation, and the Carlsberg Foundation, and has earned him multiple international awards.

Kim is also a sought-after speaker and has delivered keynotes and research presentations for organizations such as the European Commission, the Chinese government, the Danish Business Development Board, Innovation Fund Denmark, and the Confederation of Danish Industry. He has also spoken at leading academic institutions including Harvard University, INSEAD, and Stanford University. He is frequently featured in national media as an expert on entrepreneurship and SME-related topics, and has contributed more than 15 opinion columns to Danish newspapers over the past few years.

His most recent book, Everyday Entrepreneurs – Illusions and Facts, offers a fact-based and accessible look at the realities of average entrepreneurs—those who make up the vast majority yet are rarely in the spotlight. Drawing on more than two decades of research, the book critiques the hype surrounding unicorns and entrepreneurial superstars, and instead emphasizes the importance of “everyday entrepreneurship” with a message that “small is good.” Written in a conversational tone, it combines personal anecdotes, illustrative cases, and a clear narrative voice to debunk myths and offer a more nuanced view of entrepreneurship.

Kim Klyver is also the author of Store kriser – Parathed og strategier i danske virksomheder (awarded 6 stars in Dagbladet Børsen and ranked the second-best management book in Denmark in 2022), the poetry collection Livets pust – luftmangel, omveltning og kamp, which reflects his experience before, during, and after a double lung transplant in 2019, and an influential research book on entrepreneurial networking published by Oxford University Press. Beyond academia, he is a passionate and engaged public lecturer.

Rethinking Entrepreneurship is a research project at Copenhagen Business School (CBS) and generously supported by the Carlsberg Foundation. We explore the dynamic and evolving discourse of entrepreneurship, its impact on society, and its role in shaping the future. With a team of dedicated scholars, we delve deep into the question how the way we understand entrepreneurship links to our ability to address societal change and frames our thinking about society in past, present and future.
